My First Year with Footprints!

Vianca Gonzalez is a Senior majoring in Preprofessional Biology. She joined Footprints in Summer 2023.

Volunteering with Footprints has been a truly memorable experience thus far that has profoundly impacted my life. From the moment I received my acceptance email, I was honored to take part in the organization’s commitment to community, compassion, and making a tangible difference in the lives of the patients we interact with. This organization has not only allowed me to give back but also to grow in ways I never imagined. From the very first day I walked into Unit 42 at Shands, I was struck by the resilience and spirit of the kids we serve. The motto of Footprints to let “kids just be kids,” truly comes to life as we draw, play Mario Kart, watch movies, or just observe as they show us all the Fortnite skins they own. Time spent on the unit is always filled with such laughter and joy.

Footprints has also taught me the importance of extending our impact beyond the hospital walls. Through our collaboration with local organizations, we engage in community service and outreach that supports the children and families we serve on a broader scale. Events like Dance Marathon and those in collaboration with the Climb for Cancer Foundation have deepened my understanding of the issues that affect our patient population and the communities we work with. As I enter my last year here at UF, I reflect on what I have gained from Footprints and how it has shaped my perspective on life, strengthened my commitment to service and medicine, and provided me with a sense of purpose that I will carry with me long after I leave Gainesville. Being a part of this program has not only enriched the lives of the kids we support, but has also profoundly enriched my own.
