Baking with Footprints

Updated: 1 hour ago

By Ashly Almendrala

Hi my name is Ashly! I am a 4th year Microbiology Major and I joined Footprints in Spring of 2024. I have always enjoyed baking when I was younger and into my teens. My favorite thing to bake was this traditional Filipino meringue called “Sans Rival.” It is made from layers of sweetened meringue, vanilla buttercream, and sliced almonds. I actually baked it so well that I turned it into a little side hustle for myself. During the weekdays, I would focus on school and my extracurricular activities like orchestra and swim. Meanwhile on the weekends, I would do cake orders for my parents, friends, and the local Filipino community in my area.

A few weeks ago, we (Footprints) were doing a community outreach event at the Ronald McDonald House. That day we baked cookies and cupcakes for the families staying there. It was really exciting for me because it’s been a while since I’ve baked because all of my equipment to bake is at home. It was a lot of fun! Not everyone there was a pro-baker like me (joke of course, everyone was great!) and we had a little hiccup when packing the baked goods away, but it was all good at the end! I think my favorite part of the outreach event was decorating the cupcakes - everyone was so creative and they came out so aesthetically pleasing. I made my design simple though, I put some rainbow sprinkles on vanilla icing. Sometimes less is more and simple is better. Regardless, everything looked super delicious and we had a lot of fun baking for RMH 😋!
