My Journey with Footprints

Jessica Winograd is a Senior majoring in Family, Youth, and Community Services. She joined Footprints in Fall 2022.

Volunteering with Footprints at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As a senior graduating in the spring, I’ve done a lot of reflecting on my collegiate experience and what has made it so special for me. Footprints offers a unique opportunity for us as college students to bring light and joy to children and families navigating some of their toughest moments. Through play and the formation of meaningful connections, we aim to create a space where kids can simply be kids, even amidst medical challenges.

One of the most memorable aspects of Footprints is the bond we form with the patients. Whether it’s working on arts and crafts, playing a game, or sharing a story, each interaction is a reminder of the resilience and spirit of these children. It’s incredibly humbling to witness how small acts of kindness and moments of joy can have such a profound impact on one's life.

Walking through the halls of Units 41 and 42, you can truly see firsthand how Child Life and Footprints volunteers contribute to a brighter, more hopeful environment. From child-friendly playrooms stacked with toys, games, art supplies, and more to rolling Xbox carts and play mats that can be brought into patient rooms, these resources are essential in helping children cope with their medical journeys.

Being a part of Footprints has shown me the power of compassion and the importance of community support. It’s an experience that has not only shaped my perspective, but also strengthened my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Footprints reminds me daily that even the smallest smiles and gestures can leave a lasting impact.
