Unforgettable Moments: A Shift to Remember

Updated: Dec 15, 2024

Marissa Akins (pictured on the left) is a Junior majoring in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology. She joined Footprints in Summer 2023.

Footprints has been one of the most rewarding and impactful organizations I’ve had the privilege of being a part of. Over the last year, through my weekly three-hour visits to Unit 42, I have discovered the profound joy of creating meaningful connections with children facing unimaginable challenges. These moments — filled with laughter, play, and creativity — remind me of the resilience and strength of the human spirit. By simply letting these "kids just be kids," I’ve witnessed the incredible power of small acts of kindness to bring smiles to their faces, even in the most trying times.

One of my favorite memories from volunteering was when my shift buddies and I completely transformed the playroom. We moved all the furniture, covered the floor with play mats, and set up a basketball hoop. When the young boy came in, his excitement was contagious. From nailing incredible trick shots to slamming unforgettable dunks, the pure joy on his face was something I’ll never forget. I even tried to replicate some of his cool moves, sprinting toward the hoop, but he undoubtedly took home first place. Beyond basketball, we played a variety of games on the mats, including baseball, monkey in the middle, and all kinds of ball games. The energy and laughter we shared made the playroom come alive in a way I had never seen before. Seeing that patient completely immersed in play and joy reinforced why I love being part of Footprints. It’s a memory I’ll carry with me forever.

Through Footprints, I’ve gained not only invaluable life skills, but a deeper appreciation for the impact of service and the importance of lifting others up. The children I’ve had the honor of spending time with have taught me to treasure life’s simplest moments and approach every day with gratitude. This organization has left an indelible mark on my heart, shaping me into a more compassionate and service-minded individual, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of its mission.
