Why Footprints Feels Like Home

By Natasha Sequeira

Natasha Sequeira is a Senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She joined Footprints in Summer 2023.

When I received the acceptance email from Footprints in Summer 2023, I felt a spark of excitement and curiosity. I knew I was about to embark on something meaningful, but nothing could have prepared me for how deeply this organization would resonate with me. Footprints wasn’t just a volunteer organization — it was a family. From my first day, I felt welcomed with open arms by people who genuinely cared, not only about the mission of Footprints, but about each other’s growth and well-being. It wasn’t long before I realized that this sense of connection and support wasn’t just something I would find within this organization, but something that defined Footprints as a whole.

To truly understand the heart of Footprints, I joined the Organizational Advancement Committee, which gave me a front-row seat to the behind-the-scenes efforts that drive this incredible organization. Seeing the level of passion and dedication that everyone brought opened my eyes to just how much effort goes into making every shift, every activity, every event meaningful. It was during this time that I began to form strong relationships with members across all levels of Footprints. I would see members around campus and get lost in conversation with them all the time. I quickly understood that the impact of this organization stretched far beyond its service to children — it created a ripple effect of positivity and connection within the entire community.

However, my most profound experience with Footprints came unexpectedly during a routine shift. I was starting my first ever one-on-one playroom session with a little girl who was passionate about Disney princesses, was obsessed with Encanto at the time, and loved music. Unfortunately, I had the most discombobulated dance moves known to man, but I was more than determined to make my first one-on-one playroom shift the best experience yet. I picked up a mini toy karaoke box with a mini microphone and keyboard attached, and I started to play songs and sing. I danced around the entire room in circles as she chased me. Her intensity of laughter grew, and she started to slowly incorporate my uncoordinated dance moves too. In the middle of our goofy dance-off, I looked over and saw her dad in the doorway, who was laughing so hard. During this moment, I realized how powerful our role in these kids’ lives really was. The simple act of play, of creating a safe and joyful space for this little girl, had an impact that extended to her parents too. It was at that moment that I truly understood the depth of Footprints' mission: to provide an escape from the hospital, a sense of belonging, and a place where healing can begin, even if only for a moment.

As I look towards my last semester with this organization, I look back and realize I’m incredibly grateful for all the lessons and experiences I’ve gained. Each shift, each interaction with the kids, and each moment of laughter reminds me why I love what I do. Being part of Footprints has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I can’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s arts and crafts, video game tournaments, or just spending time with the kids, I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand how small moments can create lasting memories and change lives. The bonds I’ve formed, the joy I’ve been able to bring, and the opportunity to serve in such a profound way have made my time with Footprints truly unforgettable. Being part of this community has taught me to always approach life with an open heart and mind, to cherish the joy in every moment, and to value the impact of the small things we do to make others feel seen and heard.
